Our take
It's the best-rated activity in this selection (4.8 from almost a thousand reviews) and the only one that lets you actually walk on lava, something you can't do inside the Fire Mountains. Small group, good guide and a glass of wine at the end. To be clear: it doesn't cover the Volcano Route or Islote de Hilario; it complements the official visit rather than replacing it.

The experience
What you'll see
A guided walk of about 8 km in a loop through the volcanic west of Lanzarote, next to Timanfaya, with a local guide from Lava Trekking and a group of nine people at most.
- Several volcanoes and lava flows, walking across the lava field.
- Explanations of the geology, the plants colonising the lava and the history of the eruption.
- A halfway stop with Canarian snacks and Canary Islands white wine.
- A minute of silence in the middle of the lava field, which the operator offers as a pause to meditate.
How it works
The meeting point is a car park on the left of the Parque Natural de los Volcanes road, before Tinajo: it sits between two hills and is marked by a palm tree. The operator sends the Google Maps location. If you don't have a car, you can request a transfer when booking, possibly at extra cost; it doesn't reach Playa Blanca, though pickup in Yaiza is possible.
The start time follows the sunset: around 17:00 in June and 14:30 in December. It's about three hours of walking on volcanic ground, which participants describe as easy to moderate, with some uphill. Wear trainers or walking shoes and bring water and ID; the guide provides sun cream.
One important point: the listing mentions Timanfaya, but you can't walk freely inside the National Park. The route runs through the Parque Natural de los Volcanes, which surrounds it, and doesn't include Islote de Hilario or the Volcano Route coach.
Who I'd recommend it to
- Anyone who wants to walk on lava rather than just see it from a coach.
- Anyone who has already done the official Fire Mountains visit and wants more.
- Anyone looking for a small group and a local guide.
Who I wouldn't recommend it to
- Anyone who wants the geothermal demonstrations: those are on the half-day Timanfaya tour.
- Anyone with mobility problems or over 70, under the operator's conditions.
- Anyone staying in Playa Blanca without a car: there's no pickup there.
Accessibility
Not suitable for people with reduced mobility; you walk on volcanic terrain.
Cancellation policy
Free cancellation up to 24 hours before, with a full refund.
