Tuk tuk, hop-on hop-off bus or free tour in Madrid: which to choose and the cost per person

Short answer

For a couple on a budget, a free walking tour (you tip what you like; Guruwalk puts the average at €10-20 per person) or a small-group walking tour for €29.95. If you'll spend the whole day hopping between museums, the hop-on hop-off bus (€29.70, 24 hours, 3 routes). If there are 3 or 4 of you, a private tuk tuk is cheaper than the bus: €79 per vehicle for up to 4 people (1 h 15 min), which is €19.75 each for four. Note: the tuk tuk has an audio guide, not a live guide.

In Madrid, a free walking tour is paid with a tip (Guruwalk's average is €10-20 per person), the hop-on hop-off bus costs €29.70 per person per day, and a private tuk tuk €79 per vehicle of up to 4. They don't do the same job: the free tour explains the city on foot, the bus moves you around all day and the tuk tuk is a short, comfortable ride. What matters most is how many of you there are.

Quick answer by who's travelling

  • Couple on a budget: free tour or a small-group walking tour€30 · 4.9 (€29.95, max. 10). By tuk tuk you'd pay €39.50 each for 1 h 15 min.

  • First time in Madrid: a walking tour in the morning to understand the centre, and the 24-hour bus€30 · 4.2 if you'll cover the Prado, the Retiro and the Bernabéu on the same day.
  • Limited mobility: the bus is listed as wheelchair accessible; the tuk tuk and walking tours aren't.

"From" prices on our tour pages as of 1 November 2026. The bus has child tickets for ages 5 to 15 and under-4s ride free; the child price isn't shown on the page. The free tour figure is the average payment published by Guruwalk, quoted by El Salto in February 2025: it isn't a fixed fare.

Break-even: when is the tuk tuk cheaper?

From 3 people, the 1 h 15 min tuk tuk costs less per person than the bus (€79 ÷ 3 = €26.33, against €29.70). With 4 it drops to €19.75, the same as a generous free-tour tip. With 5 or 6 you need two vehicles and the per-person price goes back up (€31.60 for 5; €26.33 for 6).

But don't compare price alone: the bus is valid for 24 hours and you can use it to reach the Bernabéu or Las Ventas; the tuk tuk is a ride of just over an hour that ends where it started, at Plaza de Cánovas del Castillo (Neptune fountain).

Pros and cons

Free tour

  • For: you pay what you think it's worth at the end; a live guide telling stories and answering questions.
  • Against: groups can be large; the guide relies on tips and usually pays the platform per attendee, so there's pressure to fill the group. It's all on foot.

Hop-on hop-off bus

  • For: 3 routes (Historic, about 85 min; Modern, about 70; Cultural, about 75), hop on and off as often as you like for 24 h, audio guide in 10 languages and an open top deck. There's also a 70-minute night tour€23 · 4.2 for €23.40 with a live guide.
  • Against: recorded commentary, little shade upstairs in strong sun and the odd hold-up where you can't get off, according to reviews summarised on the tour page.

Private tuk tuk

  • For: just your group, no walking, booster seat for children, water and a phone charger. The short route links the Royal Palace, Plaza Mayor, La Latina, Sol and Gran Vía.
  • Against: audio guide in 11 languages, not a live guide; up to 4 people per vehicle; pricey for a couple.

Private walking guide

The middle ground if you want a live guide just for you: the private Gran Vía tour€159 costs €164 for 2 and €300 for 6 (€50 each).

Who each one suits

  • Free tour: backpackers, solo travellers, couples who want history without spending much.
  • Bus: first visits with a day of scattered sights, older travellers, limited mobility.
  • Tuk tuk: families with children, groups of 3-4, anyone tired or short on time.
  • Private walking tour: those who want explanations tailored to them and time to ask questions.

Common mistakes

  1. Thinking the free tour is free. Bring cash or a payment app and budget €10-20 per person.
  2. Buying the bus for a single loop. If you won't get off, a tuk tuk shared by 3-4 or a walking tour is as good or better value.
  3. Booking a tuk tuk for 5 without checking capacity. It seats 4; the fifth person means paying for a second vehicle.
  4. Expecting a guide in the tuk tuk. It's an audio guide; the driver doesn't guide.
  5. Sitting on the top deck at midday in summer without a hat or water.

Frequently asked questions

How much is a tuk tuk tour in Madrid?
Our private tuk tuks cost €79 per vehicle for the 1 h 15 min route (historic centre and Gran Vía, or Bernabéu and the Golden Mile) and €129 for the full 2 h 15 min route. The price is per tuk tuk, for up to 4 people; if there are more of you, you need two.
Is the Madrid hop-on hop-off bus worth it?
Yes, if you use it as transport for a whole day: €29.70 for 24 hours with 3 routes, unlimited hop-on hop-off and an audio guide in 10 languages. For a single 75-minute loop it's expensive compared with a tuk tuk shared between 4 or a free tour.
Are Madrid free walking tours really free?
Nothing is paid up front, but a tip is expected at the end. Guruwalk puts the average payment at €10-20 per person, and guides typically pay the platform €2-3 per attendee, according to a 2025 report by El Salto. If you give €2, the guide loses money.
Does the Madrid tuk tuk come with a guide?
Ours have a driver and an audio guide with headphones in 11 languages, not a live guide. If you want someone to explain the city and answer questions, choose a guided walking tour or a private guide.
What's the best way to see Madrid in one day?
In the morning, a walking tour of Habsburg Madrid (free tour or €29.95 small group) to get your bearings; in the afternoon, a tuk tuk if you're 3-4 or the bus if you want to stop at the Prado, the Retiro or the Bernabéu.
