Our take
Cerro del Hierro is one of those places that surprises: a maze of rock reclaimed by nature after centuries of mining. The route then follows the Vía Verde to the source of the Huéznar, downhill and easy, and with private transport there's nothing to organise. It's expensive for two at €411 each, and still €217 a head with four. Worth it for families or friends after a day in nature outside Seville; if you have a car, you can do it on your own.

The experience
How the day works
You're picked up from your accommodation in Seville and, after a short coffee stop, reach the top of Cerro del Hierro in the Sierra Norte. Here the guide explains the mining landscape: an almost 'Martian' scene where nature has taken over the old mines worked by the English from the 19th century.
You then follow the Sierra Norte Vía Verde, an old railway line, through dehesa and Mediterranean woodland to the source of the Huéznar river. There's a picnic, a visit to the Huéznar waterfalls and, according to the operator, a lunch of local mountain food before heading back to Seville.
How it works
- A route of about 7-8 km, easy and downhill.
- Private transport, picnic and water included.
- Price per person, minimum 2, maximum 6.
Who it's for
- Families and groups wanting a day in nature near Seville.
