Our take
A gentler alternative to the buggy for seeing the arid inland landscape of the south. The 1-hour ride feels short if you already ride: in that case take the 2-hour option, which is where you trot and gallop. Bring a scarf for the dust.

The experience
What you will see
- The volcanic dirt tracks and mountain trails around El Salobre.
- The arid landscape of the southern interior of Gran Canaria, a world away from the coast.
- Ravines and slopes you can't reach in a hire car.
How it works
The ride starts from the El Salobre Horse Riding ranch, inland in the south of the island, between Maspalomas and Puerto Rico. You can make your own way there or book the option with hotel pickup, available from some areas.
On arrival you're introduced to the horses and given a short safety briefing. The team matches each rider to a horse based on experience and hands out helmets (and vests for younger riders). Then you head out in a small group with the guide along mountain paths and volcanic tracks.
There are two options:
- 1 hour: designed for beginners, at a walk.
- 2 hours: for all levels; experienced riders can trot and gallop on some stretches.
Practical tips
- Clothing matters: long trousers and closed shoes. You won't be allowed to ride in shorts, a skirt, a bikini or sandals.
- If you don't have boots, you can rent them at the ranch.
- The maximum weight is 110 kg and children under 3 cannot ride.
- In summer the sun is strong inland: book early in the morning or late afternoon and bring water and sun protection.
- The tracks are dusty; a scarf for your face helps.
Who I recommend it for
- Families with children wanting a first experience with horses.
- Experienced riders looking to gallop on the 2-hour ride.
Who I don't recommend it for
- People over 110 kg.
- Anyone after a beach ride: the route is inland and in the hills.
Accessibility
Not wheelchair accessible.
Cancellation policy
Free cancellation up to 24 hours before, with a full refund.
