Toledo's Cathedral is the most expensive visit in town and the one most worth paying for. Tickets are sold on the official site and at the ticket office. Unlike the Alhambra or the Sagrada Familia, daytime entry almost never sells out: the catch is Sunday mornings and Mass times, not a lack of tickets.

Price and what's included

The official shop is tickets.catedralprimada.es. The "Visita Catedral Primada" ticket costs €12. It covers the Gothic church and its cloister, the choir, the high altarpiece, the Transparente, the chapter house, the sacristy with its El Grecos (including El Expolio), the picture gallery with Goya, Raphael, Titian and Caravaggio, and the treasury with Enrique de Arfe's monstrance.

  • Reduced and children: the Chapter's published rates put the reduced ticket (over-65s, students, disabled visitors, large families) at €8 and ages 8 to 14 at €6. The official site no longer publishes the full rate table and only sells the general ticket online, so ask for the reduced one at the ticket office with ID.
  • Free: registered Toledo residents, with ID.
  • No refunds: the official site says tickets are non-refundable except for access problems. Buy once your day is fixed.
  • The tower: it only opens at certain times and is not always available with the ticket. Ask at the ticket office if it matters to you.

Opening hours

  • Monday to Saturday: 10:00-18:30.
  • Sunday: 14:00-18:30. Mornings are for Mass.
  • Last entry: half an hour before closing.
  • Closed: 1 January, 25 December and for some celebrations, announced in advance.
  • Special hours:
    • 14:00-18:30 on 6 and 23 January, Palm Sunday, Holy Tuesday, Easter Sunday, 1 November and 8 December.
    • 11:00-17:00 on Maundy Thursday and Good Friday.
    • 16:30-18:30 on Corpus Christi.
    • 10:00-14:00 on 24 and 31 December.

On a Sunday, see other sights in the morning and leave the Cathedral for the afternoon. Our suggested order is in things to do in Toledo.

Where to buy: official site or ticket office

  • Official site: pick the day and pay by card. It saves you the ticket office queue at weekends and on bank holidays.
  • Ticket office: inside the Chapter's official shop opposite the Puerta Llana, not at the main door. On weekdays the queue is usually short.
  • Watch out for look-alike sites: resellers with similar names add a surcharge. The official ones are catedralprimada.es and tickets.catedralprimada.es.

Lumina, the night visit

In the evening the Cathedral runs Lumina, a route of about 50 minutes with light, sound and projections. It costs €24.90, or €33 combined with daytime entry. This one does sell out: capacity is limited, so book a few days ahead, especially at weekends.

With a guide or on your own

The general ticket includes an audio guide on your phone, so bring headphones. Even so, there is so much to see that a guide makes a real difference. The guided tour with entry included€25 · 4.5 lasts 1.5 to 2 hours and starts at €25.

From Madrid, the Madrid to Toledo train takes 33 minutes. Take one that arrives before 10:00 if you want to be in at opening time, when it is quietest.

Mistakes to avoid

  1. Going on a Sunday morning. There is only Mass until 14:00.
  2. Counting on the tourist bracelet. The €14 bracelet does not include the Cathedral.
  3. Arriving at closing time. Last entry is at 18:00.
  4. Leaving Lumina until the day at weekends. It is usually full.
  5. Dressing for the beach. Entry can be refused if you are not dressed modestly.

In one sentence

Tickets cost €12 and almost never sell out: buy them on the official site or at the ticket office opposite the Puerta Llana, avoid Sunday mornings, and book the guided tour with entry if you want to understand what you are looking at.
