Our take

A good pick if you want a relaxed day at sea rather than a quick sighting: sailing boat, a swim, a sandwich and cetaceans in one of the best areas in the Canaries to see them. The 5-hour version is worth it if you'd like to see Los Gigantes from the water. If you only have a morning or get seasick easily, a short trip from Los Cristianos suits you better.

What's included

  • Catamaran trip and safety briefing
  • Onboard commentary and underwater sound equipment
  • Time to swim and snorkel
  • Sandwiches and drinks (beer, soft drinks and water)
  • Chicken and rice plus wine on the 5-hour option
  • Towels
  • Hotel pickup and drop-off

Not included

  • Snorkelling gear (sold on board)
  • Vegan options (not available)

The experience

What you will see

The trip follows the coast of south-west Tenerife inside the Teno-Rasca marine strip, a protected area where pilot whales and dolphins live year-round. There are two versions: 3 hours or 5 hours, the longer one with more sailing and lunch.

  • Pilot whales and dolphins, and with luck other passing species.
  • The Costa Adeje shoreline and, on clear days, Teide rising above it.
  • On the long option, the Los Gigantes cliffs and Masca beach seen from the sea.

How it works

You set off from pier 8 in Puerto Colón, Costa Adeje: look for the boat with the White Tenerife logo. GetYourGuide lists hotel pickup and drop-off as included; check the time and pickup point after booking.

The boat is a sailing catamaran. When wind and sea allow, it sails without the engine, which makes for quieter wildlife watching. The crew explains what you're seeing and at some point drops a hydrophone so you can hear the cetaceans underwater.

Before heading back there's a swim stop for swimming or snorkelling. Snorkelling gear isn't included: it's sold on board, so bring your own mask and snorkel if you have them. Sandwiches and drinks (beer, soft drinks, water) are served; the 5-hour option adds chicken and rice with wine. Vegetarian and gluten-free food is available with 24 hours' notice; vegan isn't.

If no cetaceans are spotted, the operator lets you repeat the trip for free on another day, subject to availability.

Who I recommend it for

  • Anyone who wants half a day at sea with a swim and some food, not just whale watching.
  • Anyone staying in Costa Adeje or Playa de las Américas, close to Puerto Colón.
  • Anyone who'd like to see Los Gigantes from the water without travelling there (5-hour option).

Who I don't recommend it for

  • Anyone who gets seasick: five hours on a sailing boat is a long time. A 90-minute trip is wiser.
  • Anyone on a vegan diet.
  • Anyone short on time: there are quicker sightings trips from Los Cristianos.

Accessibility

Folding wheelchairs are accepted; non-folding and electric wheelchairs are not.
