Our take
A good way to try diving for the first time in Tenerife: a short, shallow dive, one instructor for two people and snorkelling afterwards for anyone who'd rather not go down again. Keep the 12-hour rule in mind if you plan to go up Teide or catch a flight, and note that pre-existing medical conditions will rule you out.

The experience
What you will see
A two-in-one activity for anyone who's never dived: a try dive to a maximum of 12 metres and a spell of snorkelling off Costa Adeje, in an area where sea turtles are a regular sight.
- Turtles, Atlantic fish and rays over a volcanic seabed.
- The Costa Adeje coastline from the boat.
- Sometimes dolphins or pilot whales on the way out.
How it works
It starts at the reception of Travel Sub Dive Center, a PADI 5-star centre in the Escuela Náutica building at Puerto Colón, opposite pier 5. You're kitted out (wetsuit, fins, mask) and given a safety briefing of about 30 minutes. They have prescription masks; you can't dive in ordinary glasses.
Then it's about 15 minutes by speedboat to the dive site. The dive lasts around 25 minutes, with one PADI instructor for every two people, and goes no deeper than 12 metres. That's followed by another 25 minutes or so of snorkelling to look for turtles from the surface, and the boat brings you back to the centre. Groups are 10 people at most.
Photos and videos of the dive are available at the centre. Towels and swimwear are provided, but it's best to bring your own along with flip-flops.
Two important conditions: you can't fly or go to high altitude (Teide) for 12 hours after diving, and people with heart or breathing conditions, epilepsy, diabetes or other pre-existing conditions can't take part, nor can pregnant women or anyone over 70. Children aged 8 to 17 must be accompanied by an adult who also pays for the activity.
Who I recommend it for
- Anyone wanting to try diving for the first time with plenty of instructors.
- Anyone staying in Costa Adeje or Playa de las Américas.
- Families with children aged 8+ who are confident swimmers.
Who I don't recommend it for
- Anyone planning to go up Teide or fly the same day.
- Anyone with one of the excluded medical conditions.
- Certified divers: a guided fun dive is better value.
Accessibility
GetYourGuide lists it as wheelchair accessible; for the dive itself, discuss your case with the centre before booking.
Cancellation policy
Free cancellation up to 24 hours before, with a full refund.
