Our take
La Cartuja is one of Seville's least-visited monuments given how much history it holds: Columbus planned his second voyage here, his remains lay here for thirty years, it served as a French barracks and ended up as the Pickman pottery factory, whose kilns still stand. On your own you'd only get half the story; with a private guide you get all of it in two hours. For two it's €166 each, steep for a two-hour visit. With four it drops to about €90 per person, which is far better value. It suits visitors who've already done the essentials and want something different.

The experience
What you'll see
The visit starts at the Puerta de Tierra and first explores the monastery's orchards and gardens, among the oldest in Andalusia. Then you go inside the building, now home to the Andalusian Centre of Contemporary Art: the chapter house, with the crypts of the monastery's patrons, and the Mudéjar cloister.
You'll also see the bottle kilns of the pottery factory Charles Pickman set up here in the 19th century, and hear the site's story: the thirty years it kept Christopher Columbus's remains, its time as a French army barracks and the Guadalquivir floods. It ends in the gardens.
