The experience
What you'll see
The Nerja Caves were discovered in 1959 by five boys from Maro who went in chasing bats. Today they are one of Spain's most visited natural monuments: 4 km of galleries, of which a third is open.
The route (45 minutes)
- Nativity Hall: the entrance, where Palaeolithic human remains and tools were found.
- Cascade Hall: formations that look like a frozen curtain of water. The Music and Dance Festival is held here every summer.
- Hall of the Ghosts: named after the silhouettes formed by the stalagmites.
- Cataclysm Hall: the great 60-metre dome with the 32-metre column, the largest in the world according to Guinness. The fallen formations on the floor were toppled by an earthquake 800,000 years ago.
