Las Palmas Cruise Port Guide: What to Do in Gran Canaria (2026)

Short answer

Cruise ships dock at the Santa Catalina quay, right in the city: Santa Catalina park is a few minutes away and Las Canteras beach a 10-15 minute walk. The historic Vegueta quarter is about 4-5 km away: city bus line 1 (€1.40) or a taxi (about €8-10). 4-6 hours covers Vegueta and Las Canteras; Roque Nublo or Maspalomas only make sense with 8 hours or more.

Las Palmas is one of those calls where the ship docks right inside the city: walk down the gangway and within a quarter of an hour you can be on the sand at Las Canteras. The historic Vegueta quarter, where Columbus stopped, is at the other end of town, a short bus ride away. The island's interior and the Maspalomas dunes are far off and only fit long calls.

Where does the ship dock in Las Palmas?

At the Santa Catalina quay, on the Las Palmas isthmus, next to Santa Catalina park and El Muelle shopping centre. When many ships are in, one may berth elsewhere in the port: check the daily programme and whether your line runs a shuttle.

From the quay Distance How to get there
Santa Catalina park A few minutes On foot
Las Canteras beach 10-15 min walk On foot
Vegueta and Triana (old town) About 4-5 km Bus line 1 or taxi
Maspalomas (south) 45-60 min Global bus 30 or a tour

Getting around from the port

  • City bus line 1 (Puerto-Teatro). It runs the length of the city and ends by the Pérez Galdós Theatre, between Triana and Vegueta. A single ticket costs €1.40, paid as you board. City buses are the yellow ones.
  • Taxi. On the city tariff in force since October 2025 (€3.05 flag fall on weekdays, €0.85 per km and a €0.70 port access supplement), Vegueta costs around €8-10. The per-km rate is slightly higher at weekends.
  • Global bus line 30 (the blue intercity buses). It leaves Santa Catalina for the Maspalomas lighthouse for €6.80, roughly every 20 minutes on weekdays.

What to see in Las Palmas in 4, 6 or 8 hours

Time ashore Suggested plan
4 hours Bus or taxi to Vegueta: Santa Ana Cathedral (go up the tower for the view), Columbus House and Plaza de Santa Ana. Back through Triana and some time at Las Canteras.
6 hours All of the above at an easy pace, lunch in Vegueta or on the Las Canteras promenade, then a swim or a walk to La Puntilla. With kids, the Poema del Mar aquarium next to the port.
8 hours or more The interior (Roque Nublo, Tejeda) on a tour, or the south (Maspalomas and Puerto de Mogán). Only if the ship is in for most of the day.

Vegueta and Triana

Vegueta is the city's founding quarter: cobbled lanes, wooden balconies and Santa Ana Cathedral. The cathedral opens Monday to Friday 10:00-18:00 (last entry 17:30) and Saturday 10:00-16:00; on Sundays only the tower is open, 10:00-14:00. Columbus House (Casa de Colón) opens 9:00-19:00 on weekdays and 9:00-15:00 at weekends.

A private guided walk through Triana and Vegueta takes two and a half hours and includes a tapa: a good choice if you want to understand it all in little time.

Las Canteras

Las Canteras beach has more than two kilometres of sand and a promenade along its full length. A natural rock reef just offshore keeps much of the water calm. It's a 10-15 minute walk from the quay, which makes it the perfect plan for your last hours before boarding.

Both sides of the city in one morning

If you'd rather not deal with buses, the private panoramic tour mixes taxi rides and short walks: viewpoints, Las Canteras, Santa Catalina and Vegueta in three and a half hours. The meeting point is in the port area; if you're arriving by ship, tell the provider when you book.

Roque Nublo and Maspalomas: only with time

  • Roque Nublo. It's over an hour of mountain roads. The La Goleta car park is closed: you park at Cruz de Los Llanos or Tejeda and take a shuttle bus up. Between 9:00 and 17:00 you need to book a slot at reservasroquenublo.com. The trail is about 3 km there and back, 1-1.5 hours. All in, allow at least 5 hours.
  • Maspalomas. The dunes are 45-60 minutes from the port. Bus 30 is cheap, but between there, back and waiting you'll use up half the day.

The tour from Las Palmas to Roque Nublo, Pico de las Nieves and Tejeda lasts 8 hours and picks up in the city early in the morning: it only works if you're ashore before the pick-up and the ship sails in the evening. Confirm the pick-up point and time on your voucher.

When should you be back on board?

  • All aboard is usually 30 to 60 minutes before sailing. It's in the daily programme.
  • From Vegueta, allow 30 minutes by bus plus walking; by taxi, about 15 minutes.
  • From the interior or the south, leave at least an hour of slack: the motorway into Las Palmas gets busy in the afternoon.

Sundays and public holidays

  • Las Canteras fills with locals: the best day to see it buzzing.
  • Columbus House opens 9:00-15:00 and the cathedral only opens its tower, 10:00-14:00.
  • Many Triana shops close and buses run less often.

Common mistakes

  1. Walking to Vegueta. It's 4-5 km along main roads: the bus costs €1.40.
  2. Planning Roque Nublo without a slot or with less than 8 hours.
  3. Leaving Vegueta for Sunday afternoon. The cathedral tower only opens in the morning and Columbus House closes at 15:00.
  4. Forgetting sun cream. The sun at Las Canteras is strong even in winter.

If you come back for longer, see what to see in Gran Canaria and how to hike Roque Nublo.

Frequently asked questions

Where do cruise ships dock in Las Palmas de Gran Canaria?
At the Santa Catalina quay, next to Santa Catalina park and El Muelle shopping centre. You walk straight into town: Las Canteras beach is 10-15 minutes on foot and Vegueta, the old quarter, about 4-5 km away.
How do I get from Las Palmas cruise port to Vegueta?
On Guaguas Municipales line 1 (Puerto-Teatro), which drops you by Triana and Vegueta; a single ticket costs €1.40. By taxi, on the 2025 city tariff (€3.05 flag fall, €0.85 per km and a €0.70 port supplement), it's about €8-10.
Is there time to visit Roque Nublo on a port day?
Only with 8 hours or more. It's over an hour of mountain roads, the La Goleta car park is closed (a shuttle bus runs from Cruz de Los Llanos or Tejeda) and between 9:00 and 17:00 you need a timed slot for the trail. The walk itself is 1-1.5 hours there and back.
What's open on Sundays in Las Palmas?
Las Canteras beach and promenade are at their liveliest. Columbus House opens 9:00-15:00, and at Santa Ana Cathedral on Sundays only the tower is open, 10:00-14:00. Many shops in Triana close.
Ship's excursion or independent in Gran Canaria?
In Las Palmas, go independent: Las Canteras is a stroll away and Vegueta a bus ride. The ship's tour is worth it for the interior or the south on a tight call, because the ship waits if it runs late. A private tour from the port is the middle ground.
