Bilbao is a perfect base for discovering the Basque Country. Within an hour you have one of the wildest coasts in Spain, San Sebastián, a biosphere reserve, the historic Basque heartland and the vineyards of the Rioja Alavesa. This guide sorts the best day trips by how much time you have and how to get there.

The most famous is Gaztelugatxe, but the Urdaibai coast and San Sebastián compete head to head. Choose by the day: sea, gastronomy, nature or wine.

The best day trips

Destination Distance Ideal for
Gaztelugatxe 45 min Hermitage above the sea (Game of Thrones)
San Sebastián 1h La Concha, pintxos and Monte Igueldo
Urdaibai (Mundaka, Bermeo) 45 min Biosphere reserve and surf
Gernika 30 min Basque history and the Casa de Juntas
Rioja Alavesa (Laguardia) 1h Wineries and medieval villages
Vitoria-Gasteiz 1h Medieval old town and a green city

San Juan de Gaztelugatxe

Forty-five minutes away, a hermitage on an islet joined to land by a bridge and a stairway of 241 steps, made world-famous as Dragonstone in Game of Thrones. Access is regulated with a free booking; check before you go. Spectacular coastal views.

San Sebastián

An hour away, Donostia is elegance and gastronomy: the bay of La Concha (one of the best urban beaches in Europe), Monte Igueldo, the Old Town for pintxos and one of the highest concentrations of Michelin stars in the world. A perfect day.

Urdaibai: Mundaka, Bermeo and Gernika

Forty-five minutes away, the Urdaibai biosphere reserve: marshes, beaches and fishing villages. Mundaka has one of the most famous surf waves in Europe; Bermeo, a charming fishing port; and Gernika, a symbol of Basque history, with the Casa de Juntas and the tree (and the memory of Picasso's Guernica).

The Rioja Alavesa

An hour away, the vineyards of the Rioja Alavesa: walled medieval villages like Laguardia and spectacular wineries (including Frank Gehry's hotel in Elciego). Top-tier wine tourism; book the visit.

Getting around

Getxo and the Bizkaia Bridge are reached by metro (line 1). For Gaztelugatxe, Urdaibai or the Rioja Alavesa, a car gives more freedom. San Sebastián and Vitoria have comfortable buses and trains. Book Gaztelugatxe and the wineries ahead.

What we don't recommend

  1. Going to Gaztelugatxe without a booking. Access is controlled; without it you may be turned away.
  2. Doing two far-off trips on the same day. San Sebastián or the Rioja are a full day each.
  3. Climbing the 241 steps in a rush or in poor footwear. Take it slowly.
  4. Forgetting the Atlantic weather. Bring a raincoat; the sirimiri turns up unannounced.

Common mistakes

⚠️ Warning: the slip-ups we see most.

  1. Not booking the winery visits in the Rioja Alavesa.
  2. Seeing Mundaka without Bermeo or Gernika. They're close and better together.
  3. Underestimating the parking at Gaztelugatxe in season; go early.
