Montserrat can be visited from Barcelona five very different ways — this isn't a case of near-identical listings competing for the same thing, but of durations and budgets ranging from a one-hour photoshoot to a full day with lunch and wine pairing.

How to choose in 30 seconds
- Only have half a day: small-group personalized tour (€59), with early access before the crowds.
- Tight budget: the full-day option (€47, 6-10 hours) is actually cheaper than the half-day one — worth it if you have time to spare.
- Want a top-tier food experience: Bages farmhouse with wine pairing (€109), includes a sommelier-curated 3-course lunch.
- After professional photos, not a guided visit: Signature photoshoot (€180), includes 30 edited digital photos.
- Want to go without sharing a group with anyone: private tour with hotel pickup (from €838 for the group), exclusive vehicle and guide.
- Want Barcelona and Montserrat in the same day: the small-group day with hotel pickup€149 (€149, 8 hours, English only, max 12 people) adds an outside tour of the Sagrada Família, Casa Milà and Montjuïc.
What changes between the tours
How you get up the mountain. Not every tour uses the rack railway. The half-day small-group tour goes by coach straight to the monastery, with no rack railway. CastlExperience includes the rack railway only on the options that list it. The Bages farmhouse day goes up by coach and comes down on the rack railway. The photoshoot doesn't include transport at all: you make your own way to Montserrat by train or car.
Whether you see the Black Madonna. The Moreneta has its own queue, separate from the basilica. It's included in the half-day tour's Moreneta variant and in CastlExperience's Moreneta option (around €5 extra). The Bages day and the private tour include the monastery but not the Moreneta chamber explicitly — you'd queue during free time.
Group size. The half-day tour and the Bages day cap at 22 people; CastlExperience at about 20 per guide. The half-day tour's early arrival is its real advantage: you're in the basilica before the big coach groups, which arrive from around 10:00-10:30.
The four half-day variants (chosen at booking): basilica only; with the Moreneta (8:30 and 13:30 departures); with the boys' choir (Monday to Friday, 9:30 departure, not in summer); and a longer version with winery and lunch (Monday to Saturday, 8:30). It leaves from Placeta de Vicenç Albert Ballester, near Passeig de Lluís Companys — there's no hotel pickup.
The private tour. Hotel pickup, your own vehicle and guide, and a flexible route — the Santa Cova path or the Sant Miquel cross viewpoint can be added on request. Book at least 3 days ahead. The listing states different pricing bases in different places, so check the total for your group in the booking calendar before paying.
Doing it on your own
You don't need a tour to get there. Take the FGC R5 train from Plaça Espanya to Monistrol de Montserrat (about an hour), then the rack railway up (about 20 minutes). The Trans Montserrat ticket covers metro, train, rack railway, the Sant Joan and Santa Cova funiculars and direct access to the Virgin's throne, from €50 as of 2026; Tot Montserrat adds the museum and a buffet lunch, from €71.50. Things to know before you go
- The Moreneta: you can visit the Virgin's throne from 8:00 to 10:30 and from 12:00 to 18:25. In high season the queue can take 30-60 minutes; early-access tours avoid most of it.
- The boys' choir (Escolania): it usually sings the Salve and Virolai at 13:00 Monday to Friday and at the 11:00 Mass on Sundays, but usually not on Saturdays. Both need advance booking, and the schedule changes with holidays and choir tours: check the calendar on escolania.cat first.
- Funiculars: Sant Joan goes up to the trails with the best views (then an easy one-hour walk to the hermitage); Santa Cova goes down towards the Holy Cave. Neither is included in most tours, and both close in strong wind.
- Weather: the mountain is noticeably cooler than Barcelona and often misty in the morning. Bring an extra layer, even in summer.
- Sundays and religious holidays: the basilica may close to visitors during services.
- Food: the self-service cafeteria is expensive and mediocre. Buy mató cheese with honey at the farmers' stalls near the square, or eat when you get back.
- How long you need: half a day for the basilica and the Moreneta; a full day if you go up to Sant Joan.
Before booking
Check on the listing whether your option includes the Moreneta if that's your main reason for going. In high season, book ahead, especially the small-group and private options. All the group tours, the photoshoot and the private tour offer free cancellation up to 24 hours before.
