Our take
Baelo Claudia may be Spain's most beautiful Roman site thanks to its setting: right on Bolonia beach, with the dune beside it and the sea in front. Combining it with Tarifa in one day from Seville is a lot of driving, and doing it privately with pickup from your accommodation makes it far easier. For two it's €369 each, dropping to €211 each for four. It suits anyone with a few days in Seville who wants to see the wilder Cádiz coast; if you'll be staying on the coast, it's better done from there.

The experience
How the day works
You're picked up at 8:00 from your accommodation in Seville and, after a coffee stop, reach Baelo Claudia, a Roman city on the seashore. It was the leading producer of garum, the fish sauce prized by Rome's upper classes. The guided visit lasts about 90 minutes through its streets and religious and industrial buildings, between the Natural Park and Bolonia beach with its dunes.
Then on to Tarifa, with its white streets and its role in the Moorish conquest 1,300 years ago. You visit San Mateo church, the Moorish quarter and Guzmán el Bueno castle, from where you can see the African coast, 14 km away. Lunch is in Tarifa (not included).
