Our take
The Thyssen is the easiest to enjoy of Madrid's three big museums: smaller than the Prado, very well organised and with a route that runs from the 13th to the 20th century without gaps. If you only have time for one and you like Impressionism or modern art, this is the one. The included audio guide makes it better value than buying at the box office.

The experience
What you will see
The Thyssen's permanent collection covers eight centuries of European painting in chronological order, starting on the top floor:
- Early Italian and Flemish masters: Duccio, Van Eyck and Renaissance portraits such as Ghirlandaio's Giovanna Tornabuoni.
- Baroque: Caravaggio, Rembrandt and Rubens.
- Impressionism and Post-Impressionism: Monet, Degas, Renoir and Van Gogh, one of the museum's highlights.
- 20th century: German Expressionism, the avant-garde, American painting and Pop Art.
How it works
You buy the ticket for a specific day and carry it on your phone. The museum is in the Villahermosa Palace (Paseo del Prado, 8), opposite the Neptune fountain and a five-minute walk from the Prado.
The audio guide is included. The route starts on the second floor and works down chronologically, so it is hard to get lost.
Who I recommend it for
- Visitors with time for only one museum who prefer a manageable one.
- Fans of Impressionism or modern art, which the Prado does not cover.
- Anyone who wants to go at their own pace with explanations, without a group.
Who I don't recommend it for
- Anyone who needs flexible dates: the ticket is non-refundable.
- Under-18s: they enter free with a ticket from the box office.
- Anyone happy to queue for free entry: on Mondays 12:00-16:00 the permanent collection costs nothing.
Accessibility
The museum is wheelchair accessible, with lifts between floors.
Cancellation policy
This ticket is non-refundable: it cannot be cancelled or changed once purchased.
