Our take
A short, cheap visit to see inside Madrid's most striking Neo-Mudéjar building and understand what the bullring means to the city, without having to attend a bullfight. The best part is standing in the arena and walking out through the Puerta Grande; the simulator is more of a novelty.

The experience
What you will see
The Las Ventas bullring opened in 1931, designed by José Espeliú, and is the great example of Madrid's Neo-Mudéjar style: exposed brick, horseshoe arches and glazed tiles. With more than 23,000 seats, it is the largest bullring in Spain.
The route
- Stands and boxes, with a full view of the arena.
- The arena, where you can stand in the centre and see the bullring from below.
- Bullfighters' courtyard, chapel and infirmary, the part the public never sees during a bullfight.
- The Puerta Grande, through which triumphant bullfighters are carried out on the crowd's shoulders.
- Bullfighting museum, with traje de luces costumes, posters and portraits of historic figures.
Hemingway, Ava Gardner, Picasso and Orson Welles all sat in its stands, and the audio guide tells their stories.
