Our take
The Gorafe desert is one of Andalusia's strangest landscapes: coloured ravines, fairy chimneys and rock layers that look like an ancient seabed, which is exactly what they were. By 4x4 you reach the viewpoints without hiking, with someone to explain what you're looking at. It's a private experience and pricey for two (€490 each); for four it falls to €277. It suits travellers who know Granada and want a completely different landscape, or families with children over 8.

The experience
What you'll see
The Gorafe desert looks like the seabed it was millions of years ago. The 4x4 route passes the devil's fillets, the gypsum kilns, Cerro de la Bandera and the fairy chimneys, and stops at the Colorados viewpoint. It also takes in the Caballo ravine, the Toril irrigation channel and Gorafe's angular unconformity, with the chance to see the Desert House.
Along the way you learn about the geological, archaeological, ecological and cultural value of the Granada Geopark.
How it works
You're picked up in Granada and both transfer and route are private. There's a cold breakfast during the tour. Bookings are from 2 people (up to 7), Monday to Saturday. Minimum age 8.
Who it's for
