Our take

The Caminito del Rey is one of the most spectacular outdoor experiences in Spain: a walkway built in 1905, 100 metres above the Gaitanes Gorge, refurbished and reopened in 2015 with all the modern safety measures. The 5 km route through mountains and suspension bridges offers unique views — one of those places that looks great on Instagram and even more impressive in person. For visitors based in Granada, the organised tour is clearly the best option: the Caminito is 150 km away in Málaga, public transport is awkward and tickets sell out weeks in advance. For €135 you get private return transport (4 hours of driving in total), guaranteed entry (€22 on its own), an official guide and lunch included — a reasonable ratio. What NOT to do if: you have a fear of heights, vertigo, are travelling with children under 8 or have mobility problems. The walkway is well built, but the 100 m is real and you feel it. For everyone else, it's one of the most memorable day trips you can do from Granada — outside the Arab-Christian cultural axis of the city and inside the natural axis of southern Spain.

Frequently asked questions

Is the Caminito del Rey safe?
Yes, completely. The current walkway (opened in 2015) is entirely new, with handrails, reinforced planks and non-slip flooring. The victims who gave the Caminito its dangerous reputation were on the original walkway, abandoned decades ago. The new one has an excellent safety record. That said, the 100 m of height is real — if you have a fear of heights, better to skip it.
Why book this tour instead of going on my own?
Caminito tickets sell out weeks in advance. If you arrive in Granada and decide the day before, you won't get a ticket. This tour guarantees them (the operator buys them in advance). There's also no direct public transport from Granada — you'd need car, train+taxi or bus with changes. And the route is linear (not circular): you have to get back to the start, which the tour solves with private transport.
How much walking is there?
Roughly 5 kilometres, mostly downhill along walkways and trails. The route takes about 3-4 hours at a relaxed pace, with photo stops. It's manageable for anyone in reasonable shape (3 hours of walking with moderate elevation change), but it's not "a stroll" — closed shoes and water are essential.
Is it worth the €135 price?
For the Caminito experience (a 100 m-high suspension walkway, spectacular views of the Gaitanes), €135 is a fair price when you include private transport from Granada (~150 km), guaranteed entry (€22 if bought separately), guide and lunch. Compared to going on your own: you save time and the uncertainty of the ticket. It's one of the most memorable experiences in southern Spain.
