Our take
The Medes have some of the best underwater scenery in the Spanish Mediterranean, and this trip is the easiest way to see it without scuba diving. It's more hands-on than the glass-bottom boat cruise, so pick it if you really want to get in the water.

The experience
What you'll see
- The underwater life of the Medes Islands marine reserve, with fish and seagrass meadows.
- The seven islets of the archipelago, a mile off L'Estartit beach.
- The L'Estartit coastline from the water.
How it works
At the Medaqua centre you're given your gear and a talk on how to use it and what you'll see. You walk to the boat and reach the islands in 10 minutes. There you snorkel in groups of 8 to 10 with a guide for about 50 minutes. Afterwards there's time to swim or sunbathe on deck and, if the sea allows, a short cruise around the islands before heading back to port.
Who I recommend it for
- Families with children aged 6 and up.
- Anyone who wants to see marine life without a diving licence.
- Less confident swimmers: there's a life vest, wetsuit and a guide in the water.
Who I don't recommend it for
- Anyone who just wants a boat ride without getting wet.
- Children under 6.
Accessibility
The provider lists it as wheelchair accessible but also as unsuitable for people with mobility impairments; check before booking.
