Our take
One of the best-rated activities in the north, and for good reason: the guide turns a short walk into a lesson in astronomy and island history. By day you can climb Calderón Hondo on your own for free, so what you're paying for is the night and the storytelling. Check the cloud forecast before you confirm.

The experience
What you'll see
- The Calderón Hondo crater, a volcano near Lajares about 70 metres deep.
- From the rim, Lajares, the Corralejo Dunes and Lanzarote.
- At night, constellations, planets and the Milky Way over the crater.
How it works
You meet the guide at the Repsol h2go petrol station in Corralejo or, with the transfer option, you're picked up by bus in Corralejo, El Cotillo or Puerto del Rosario. From the Lajares area you climb the volcanic trail to the crater rim, where the guide explains the volcano's geology and the legends of the island's first inhabitants about fire and sky. Once it's fully dark, the stargazing begins. About three hours in all.
The start time depends on the time of year: the guide emails it 24 hours before. Some participants say they caught the sunset before it got dark.
Practical tips
- Book three days ahead: the operator checks the forecast.
- Clouds: there's no refund if you can't see the stars. Check the forecast first.
- Warm layer: at night, with the wind, it gets cold even in summer.
- Footwear: closed shoes; loose lava is sharp.
- By day: the trail is free and open if you'd rather go on your own.
Who I'd recommend it to
- Anyone staying in Corralejo or El Cotillo looking for a different evening plan.
- Anyone interested in astronomy or the island's history.
- Anyone who wants a short walk with a big reward.
Who I would NOT recommend it to
- Pregnant women, people over 65 or anyone with a fear of heights: the operator itself advises against it.
- Anyone with only a few days who can't book with some slack in case it's cloudy.
Accessibility
Not suitable for wheelchair users or people with reduced mobility.
Cancellation policy
Free cancellation up to 24 hours before, with a full refund.
