Our take
This is the day trip from Bilbao that best mixes inland and coastal Gipuzkoa, with Loyola and Getaria as less common stops. San Sebastián gets a walk and lunch, so it is a taster of the area rather than an in-depth visit.

The experience
What you will see
- The Sanctuary of Loyola, with the basilica and the birthplace of St Ignatius.
- Getaria, the fishing town of Juan Sebastián Elcano and Cristóbal Balenciaga.
- Zarautz beach, from the coach.
- San Sebastián's old town and La Concha from Mount Igueldo.
How it works
You leave Bilbao by coach and reach Loyola in about an hour for the guided visit. Next comes a short walk in Getaria, a drive past Zarautz and then San Sebastián, with a tour of the old town and two hours of free time for lunch. In the afternoon you go up Igueldo to see the bay and head back to Bilbao.
Who I recommend it for
- Anyone wanting to see several Gipuzkoa towns in a day without a car.
- Anyone interested in St Ignatius or the Basque coast.
Who I don't recommend it for
- Anyone who wants to spend the whole day in San Sebastián.
