Tuk tuk, horse carriage or hop-on hop-off bus in Seville: which to choose and what it costs

Short answer

If there are 4 of you, a private tuk tuk is the cheapest and most comfortable option: €99 for an hour for all four, €24.75 each, with a local driver-guide. For a couple on a budget, the hop-on hop-off bus (€28 per person, 24 hours, two walking tours included) or a walking tour. Break-even: when is the tuk tuk cheaper?

For 4 people, the 1-hour tuk tuk (€24.75) is cheaper than the bus (€28). For 2, the bus wins (€28 against €44.50). For 5 or 6 you need two tuk tuks and the bus is cheaper again. The private horse carriage doesn't compete on price: even full, it's €74.50 each.

Bear in mind you're not buying the same thing: the bus is valid for 24 hours and includes two walking tours plus entry to the Iglesia del Salvador and the Macarena Museum; the tuk tuk and carriage are a closed loop that ends where it began.

Pros and cons

Private tuk tuk

  • For: just your group, electric, a local driver-guide who explains and stops for photos, plus covers and blankets if it rains or turns chilly (on the 2-hour version). It leaves from the Saba car park at Plaza de Armas.
  • Against: up to 4 people; the short route focuses on Plaza de España, María Luisa Park, the Maestranza bullring and Triana.

Horse carriage

  • For: Seville's classic image. The private ride has a coachman and a guide versed in Andalusian history, a soft drink and, at the end, a local wine. It leaves from Calle Adriano in El Arenal.
  • Against: the price, and some people prefer not to ride for the horses' sake, especially in the hottest hours. Street carriages have a coachman only, no guide.

Hop-on hop-off bus

  • For: the cheapest for 1-2 people, hop on and off as often as you like, audio guide in over 15 languages, wheelchair accessible and extras (two walking tours, entry tickets). Buses every 30-40 minutes.
  • Against: recorded commentary and a 75-minute loop along the avenues: it doesn't go into the Santa Cruz quarter.

Who each one suits

  • Bus: solo travellers and couples, older travellers or those with limited mobility, anyone wanting to get around all day.
  • Tuk tuk: families, groups of 3-4, hot days, anyone short on time.
  • Horse carriage: a special occasion or the classic photo, with the budget for it.
  • On foot or by bike: those who'd rather understand the city with a live guide and spend less.

Common mistakes

  1. Getting into a street carriage without agreeing price and duration. Fares are regulated; ask first.
  2. Booking a tuk tuk for 5. It seats 4: the fifth person means another vehicle.
  3. Buying the bus for a single loop. If you won't get off, a tuk tuk shared by 4 is better value.
  4. Doing any of them at midday in summer. Go early or around sunset.
  5. Expecting to see Santa Cruz from the bus. That quarter is explored on foot.
