Cádiz cruise port guide 2026: what to see in 4, 6 or 8 hours and getting to Seville or Jerez

Short answer

In Cádiz the ship docks a 5-minute walk from the old town, so you don't need a shuttle, bus or taxi. With 4-6 hours, stay in Cádiz (Cathedral, Torre Tavira, El Pópulo and La Caleta). Seville is 1 h 30 by road and only worth it with 8 hours or more ashore: by train on your own, the risk of missing the ship is yours; with a port-pickup shore excursion (from €119) or a private trip (from €600 per group), the operator works to the ship's timetable.

Cádiz is the easiest port call in Andalusia: you walk off the ship and five minutes later you're in Plaza de San Juan de Dios, opposite the town hall. The real decision isn't how to get into town but whether to stay in Cádiz or head to Seville, and that depends on how long your ship is in port.

Where do cruise ships dock in Cádiz?

Ships berth along the quays of the Cádiz-Ciudad basin (Reina Sofía, Reina Victoria, Marqués de Comillas, Ciudad and Alfonso XIII). There are two terminals:

Terminal Facilities Way into town
Ciudad quay Tourist information, shops, free wifi Straight onto Paseo de Canalejas and Plaza de San Juan de Dios
Alfonso XIII quay The larger one: tourist information, shops, free wifi A few minutes' walk to the same spot

From either, the centre is about a 5-minute walk. The train station is roughly 900 metres away (11 minutes) and the bus station 1 km.

Getting around

Option Use it for Good to know
Walking The whole old town Flat and compact: the best option
City bus, line 1 La Victoria beach and the newer part of town Stops at Plaza de España, 300 metres away
Taxi Reduced mobility or luggage Ranks within 5 minutes of the port
Train Jerez (about 35 min) or Seville (1 h 25-1 h 50) Station an 11-minute walk away
Catamaran El Puerto de Santa María 30-minute crossing

What to see in 4, 6 or 8 hours

Time ashore Plan What to book
4 hours The Cathedral and its Clock Tower, El Pópulo and the Roman Theatre, Plaza de las Flores and the Central Market, Torre Tavira and its camera obscura Torre Tavira and Cathedral guided tour, from €38
6 hours All that plus fried fish for lunch in La Viña and a walk round La Caleta to Santa Catalina castle Bay catamaran trip, from €19
8 hours or more Seville on a port-pickup tour, or Jerez by train for a sherry bodega Seville shore excursion, from €119

The Torre Tavira and Cathedral guided tour starts in Plaza de San Juan de Dios, right by the port, and lasts 2 hours, so it fits any port call.

For a group, the private old-town walking tour starts outside the town hall and costs from €180 per group (2 hours, 1-2 people) or about €300 for 4. The listing doesn't include quayside pickup, but the meeting point is five minutes from the ship.

Getting to Seville from the ship (and the risk of missing it)

Seville is about 90 minutes along the AP-4 motorway. Once there you need at least 4 hours for the Cathedral, the Alcázar and Santa Cruz, so the whole day comes to 7-8 hours. There are three ways to do it:

1. Cruise-passenger shore excursion (from €119 per person). Picks you up and drops you back at the port, lasts 8 hours and includes an English-language guided walk through Santa Cruz, the Archivo de Indias, the Cathedral and the Alcázar, in groups of 10 to 18. The drive is on a large coach and the Alcázar ticket isn't included: request it from the operator as soon as you book. Timings follow your actual docking time and the operator includes a back-to-ship guarantee.

2. Private trip (from about €600 per group). Your own driver, quayside pickup (give your ship's name when booking), a 2-hour guided walk and free time; 8 h 30 in all. For 4 people it's about €880. If you want to go inside the Alcázar and Cathedral with an official guide, the version with tickets costs about €598 for 2 and €840 for 4, but it's non-refundable.

3. By train on your own. There are around 20 departures a day from Cádiz to Seville, from 1 h 25 on the Alvia to 1 h 50 on Media Distancia trains, from about €10 each way. It's the cheapest option, but the risk is all yours: if the return train is late or you miss one, the ship sails without you. We'd only recommend it with 9-10 hours in port and a return train that reaches Cádiz at least 1 h 30 before all aboard. On Sundays, Seville Cathedral doesn't open to visitors until 2.30pm.

What about Jerez?

Jerez is the easy option: about 35 minutes by train (from around €6 each way) from Cádiz station. Six hours gives you time for a sherry bodega, the centre and the Alcázar of Jerez. We don't sell Jerez tours from the port, so go independently and book the bodega visit on its website.

Ship's tour, cruise-passenger tour or private?

Option Price per person (2 travellers) If something runs late
Cruise line excursion Whatever your cruise line charges The ship waits for its own tours
Cruise-passenger tour from the port €119 + Alcázar ticket The operator works to the ship's timetable and gives a back-to-ship guarantee
Private from the port About €300 (about €220 for 4) The driver works to your timetable; the ship won't wait
Train on your own From about €20 return All the risk is yours

The only tour the ship waits for is its own. With anyone else, the operator takes responsibility for timing, so pick one designed for cruise passengers and read what its guarantee covers.

What time should you be back?

  • All aboard is usually 30-60 minutes before sailing and is given in ship's time: check the daily programme.
  • Staying in Cádiz on your own, it's enough to be at the terminal an hour before all aboard.
  • If you've gone to Seville or Jerez by train, allow 1 h 30 of margin on arrival in Cádiz, plus the 11-minute walk to the terminal.
  • Take your cruise card and photo ID.

Sundays and public holidays

  • Cádiz Central Market: closed on Sundays.
  • Cádiz Cathedral: Sunday visits in the afternoon only.
  • Roman Theatre and Cádiz Museum: closed on Mondays; open on Sundays.
  • In Seville: the Cathedral opens on Sundays from 2.30pm to 7pm (Monday to Saturday, 10.45am to 6pm).
  • Shops: many small shops close on Sundays. Bars and restaurants open as normal.

Common mistakes

  1. Taking the train to Seville with under 9 hours in port. You'll spend more time on the train than in Seville.
  2. Booking the Seville tour and forgetting the Alcázar ticket. You have to request it from the operator.
  3. Taking a taxi into town. It's a 5-minute walk.
  4. Planning the Central Market for a Sunday. It's closed.
  5. Booking the private trip with tickets without checking the cancellation terms. It's non-refundable.

Frequently asked questions

Do I need transport from Cádiz cruise port to the old town?
No. The cruise terminals are on the Ciudad and Alfonso XIII quays, and the Ciudad terminal opens straight onto Paseo de Canalejas and Plaza de San Juan de Dios. The old town is about 5 minutes away on foot.
Can I take the train to Seville from the ship?
Yes. Cádiz station is about 900 metres from the terminal, an 11-minute walk, and trains take between 1 h 25 (Alvia) and 1 h 50 (Media Distancia). Only do it with 9-10 hours in port and pick a return train that gets back to Cádiz at least 1 h 30 before all aboard: if it runs late, the ship won't wait.
How much is a Seville shore excursion from Cádiz?
The group tour for cruise passengers costs from €119 per person, with port pickup and an English-speaking guide; the Alcázar ticket is requested separately. Private trips start at about €600 per group for 1-2 people without tickets, or about €598 for 2 with the Alcázar and Cathedral included.
Is there time to visit Jerez on a port day?
Yes, it's easier than Seville: the train from Cádiz to Jerez takes about 35 minutes. Six hours is enough for a sherry bodega and a walk round the centre, as long as you head back with an hour to spare.
What's closed in Cádiz on a Sunday?
The Central Market doesn't open on Sundays and the Cathedral can only be visited in the afternoon. In Seville, the Cathedral opens on Sundays from 2.30pm to 7pm. The Roman Theatre and the Cádiz Museum close on Mondays, not Sundays.
