Bilbao is a very comfortable city with kids. It's compact, flat along the river, with an easy metro and tram, parks, a funicular with views and beaches 20 minutes away without a car. This guide gathers the plans that really work with family, combining city and coast without stress.

The key is to alternate: a morning of river and sculptures, an afternoon of park or beach. And to make the most of public transport putting everything within reach.

The plans that work

Artxanda funicular. Up in under three minutes to the viewpoint with the best views of Bilbao between mountains. At the top there's a park and a playground. Cheap and fun.

Guggenheim sculptures (from outside). Without going into the museum, kids are amazed by 'Puppy' (the giant flower dog), the 'Maman' spider and the fog sculpture. Strolling the river is free and eye-catching.

Itsasmuseum (Maritime Museum). By the river, with cranes, boats and docks that little ones love; lots of it outdoors.

Doña Casilda Park. The city's great park: ducks, a pond, a playground and the fountains. Ideal for letting them run.

Metro to the beach. The best of Bilbao with kids: by metro (line 1) you reach the family beaches of Plentzia and Gorliz (wide sand and calm water) in 30-40 minutes, with no car.

Tram and Azkuna Zentroa. The tram skirts the river; at the Azkuna Zentroa (Alhóndiga) there's a pool with a glass floor you can see from below, curious columns and a children's library.

A weekend route with family

Day Plan
Day 1 Morning: river and Guggenheim sculptures · Afternoon: Artxanda funicular
Day 2 Morning: Itsasmuseum and Doña Casilda · Afternoon: beach by metro (Plentzia/Gorliz)
Extra day Bizkaia Bridge (gondola) and Getxo, or pintxos with family

Around with kids

Half an hour away, the Bizkaia Bridge (Hanging Bridge) at Getxo crosses the river in a hanging gondola, a World Heritage Site. Further out, in Karrantza, Karpin Abentura (an animal park) and the Pozalagua Caves. Gaztelugatxe (241 steps) is better for older kids.

Where to eat with kids

The pintxos of the Old Town are good for a bite without waits; many bars have tortilla, croquettes and simple options that kids enjoy. The La Ribera Market has a tasting area. Book if you want a table to sit down calmly.

What we don't recommend with kids

  1. Taking very small children to Gaztelugatxe. It's 241 steps up and down.
  2. Stacking up the inside of the Guggenheim with small kids. Better the sculptures outside, unless there's a children's workshop.
  3. Giving up the plan if it drizzles. The sirimiri is common; almost everything is indoors or rainproof.

Common mistakes

⚠️ Warning: the slip-ups we see most with families.

  1. Not using the metro for the beach. It's the easiest way to combine city and coast.
  2. Forgetting the raincoat. It rains often all year.
  3. Underestimating the slopes of the Old Town and Artxanda with a pram; the funicular helps.
