Reddish volcanic cones of the Fire Mountains in Timanfaya

Timanfaya and the Fire Mountains

The National Park was born from the eruptions of 1730 to 1736. The ticket (€30, online only with a time slot) includes the Volcano Route by coach and the geothermal demonstrations at Islote de Hilario, where the ground is scorching just a few centimetres down.

The inner lake of Jameos del Agua inside a lava tube

Jameos del Agua

A lava tube turned by César Manrique into a garden, an auditorium and a white pool. The inner lake is home to tiny blind crabs found nowhere else. Open daily from 10:00 to 18:00.

A lit gallery inside Cueva de los Verdes

Cueva de los Verdes

Part of the same lava tube as the Jameos, created by the La Corona volcano. The guided visit covers about a kilometre of stacked galleries and ends with a surprise best left unspoilt.

View of La Graciosa from the Mirador del Río

Mirador del Río

A viewpoint Manrique built into the top of the Famara cliffs at the island's northern tip. From its windows you look down on the El Río strait and the whole of La Graciosa.

Vines planted in pits of volcanic ash at La Geria

La Geria

The Canaries' most famous farming landscape: each vine grows in a pit dug into volcanic ash and sheltered from the wind by a stone wall. The wineries along the LZ-30 road are open to visitors and pour volcanic Malvasía.

The green Charco de los Clicos lagoon beside El Golfo beach

El Golfo and Charco de los Clicos

A green lagoon beside a black-sand beach, inside half a crater open to the sea. Close by are Los Hervideros, where waves crash through the lava, and the Janubio salt pans.

A Papagayo cove with turquoise water between cliffs

Papagayo Beaches

Coves of golden sand and calm water between cliffs, in the Los Ajaches Natural Monument east of Playa Blanca. You reach them on a dirt track (non-residents pay €3 per car) or by sea.
