Our take
The Sacromonte Abbey is one of those places hardly anyone visits that turns out to be fascinating: caves where in 1595 remains attributed to Saint Cecilius and the famous lead books were found, a quiet cloister and views over the Darro valley. A private guide makes sense of a tangled story. The included transfer takes care of the climb, which is long on foot. For two it's €162 each, so it's better value from 3 or 4 people. It suits repeat visitors to Granada or anyone looking beyond the usual circuit.

The experience
What you'll see
In 1595, Roman-era kilns were found on Mount Ilipulitano containing remains and a tombstone attributing them to Saint Cecilius, first bishop of Iliberis (today's Granada). The hill later became known as Sacromonte, the sacred mount, and the abbey was built there.
The visit takes in the Holy Caves, where the lead books and the martyr's remains were found; the cloister; the collegiate church; the Venancio Blanco courtyard; the Patio of the Stars and the permanent exhibition, with a valuable documentary legacy.
