PortAventura World is one of the largest theme-park resorts in Europe, and the great family plan of the Costa Daurada, a step from Tarragona. But it's so big that it pays to organise: knowing which park to choose, how many days to spend and how to dodge the queues is the difference between a perfect day and an exhausting one. This guide sorts it out.
The golden rule: one day per park. Trying to see it all in a single day is the recipe for ending up wrecked and missing the best rides.
The three parks
| Park | What it is | For whom |
|---|---|---|
| PortAventura Park | The main park, 6 themed worlds | Everyone; the must |
| Ferrari Land | The Ferrari park, with Red Force | Speed lovers |
| Caribe Aquatic Park | Water park (summer) | Hot days |
PortAventura Park. Six themed areas (Mediterrània, Far West, México, China, Polynesia and SésamoAventura for the youngest). Here are the star roller coasters: Dragon Khan and Shambhala. A full day.
Ferrari Land. The park dedicated to Ferrari, with Red Force, the tallest and fastest roller coaster in Europe (0 to 180 km/h). It's smaller; combine it with half a day of the main park or do it separately.
Caribe Aquatic Park. The water park, open in summer: ideal for the hottest days.
Tickets and days
⭐ Tip: buy tickets online (cheaper than at the gate) and consider the Express Pass to skip queues on the most popular rides on busy days. If you stay at the resort hotels, you usually get early park access.
There are 1, 2 or 3-day tickets and combined ones (PortAventura + Ferrari Land). For two parks, two days is better.
With kids
The SésamoAventura area is designed for the youngest, with gentle rides and Sesame Street characters. Check the minimum heights for the big coasters before queuing: many can't be ridden by small children.
Getting there
By train, the PortAventura station (Renfe) is right next door: ~10 minutes from Tarragona and just over an hour from Barcelona. By car, a direct exit off the AP-7/N-340 with ample parking.
When to go
The season runs from mid-March to early January, with special events at Halloween and Christmas (among the best times). Avoid weekends and holidays if you can: the queues soar. Go at opening.
What we don't recommend
- Trying two parks in one day. There's no time; one park per day.
- Mixing it with Tarragona's Roman old town on the same day. Each needs its own day.
- Going on a bank-holiday weekend without an Express Pass. Endless queues.
- Not checking the minimum heights if you go with kids.
Common mistakes
⚠️ Warning: the slip-ups we see most.
- Buying at the gate. Online is cheaper and you skip the entry queue.
- Arriving late. The first hour has the shortest queues.
- Forgetting that Ferrari Land and Caribe are separate (different ticket/season).
In one sentence
PortAventura World is a day (or more) of roller coasters and fun a step from Tarragona, best done one park per day and with the ticket bought online. We note it as a family plan in Tarragona in one day.
