The Patios of Córdoba: when to see them and how (festival and year-round)

A guide to the Patios of Córdoba: what the Patio Festival is (May), the best quarters (San Basilio, Santa Marina), the Viana Palace and how to see them without queues.

The patios are the soul of Córdoba, and in May, its greatest spectacle. Private houses open their whitewashed courtyards, packed with pots and flowers, for anyone to come in and see them for free. The Patio Festival is UNESCO Intangible Heritage, but they can also be seen out of season if you know where. This guide tells you when, where and how, without queues or too much heat.

The key: come in May and you'll experience the most beautiful Córdoba of the year (but the busiest); come another time and you still won't miss out on patios.

The Patio Festival (May)

For about two weeks in May, dozens of houses in the historic quarters open their patios and compete in a contest. Entry is free; you do a walking route from patio to patio. It coincides with the May Crosses (early in the month) and precedes the Fair (late May): Córdoba's big month.

⭐ Tip: during the festival, visit the patios first thing in the morning or in the late afternoon. At midday there are queues and heat. San Basilio is the quarter with the most patios together: start there.

Quarters to see them

Quarter Why
San Basilio (Alcázar Viejo) The patio quarter; the greatest concentration
Santa Marina / San Lorenzo Award-winning patios, local atmosphere
The Jewish Quarter Patios beside the Mosque, very central
San Agustín Grand houses with large patios

Out of season: the Viana Palace

If you don't come in May, you won't miss out on patios. The Viana Palace gathers twelve different patios (and a garden) and is open all year: it's the best way to understand the architecture of the Córdoba patio at leisure. Some San Basilio houses also keep their patios open outside the festival (a token entry).

How to organise yourself

  • In May: a walking route through San Basilio and Santa Marina, first thing or at sunset. Bring water.
  • Rest of the year: the Viana Palace + the visitable patios of San Basilio.
  • Combine it with the rest of the old town in Córdoba in one day.

What we don't recommend

  1. Visiting the patios at midday in May. Long queues and a lot of heat.
  2. Coming in May without booked accommodation. The city fills up weeks ahead.
  3. Believing there are only patios in May. The Viana Palace has them year-round.
  4. Touching the plants or forcing photos in private homes. They're homes; respect the flow.

Common mistakes

⚠️ Warning: the slip-ups we see most.

  1. Not booking well ahead if you travel for the Patio Festival.
  2. Trying to see them all. There are dozens; pick two or three quarters.
  3. Forgetting a tip or donation at the houses that ask for it: they maintain the patios.

In one sentence

The Patios of Córdoba are flowers, whitewash and neighbours opening their homes: in May, during the World Heritage festival; the rest of the year, at the Viana Palace. A must that completes Córdoba in one day.
