Mallorca

Palma Cathedral, the Drach Caves and the Serra de Tramuntana. The largest of the Balearics, a blend of dream beaches and World Heritage mountains.

Mallorca is the largest of the Balearic Islands and one of the great Mediterranean destinations, with the vibrant city of Palma as its capital —just over 400,000 people. It's far more than sun and sand: it blends dream coves with a mountain range declared a World Heritage Site.

Palma revolves around its Cathedral (La Seu), Gothic and right on the sea, with an old town of courtyards and lanes. Inland and to the north stretches the Serra de Tramuntana, with stone villages like Valldemossa and Sóller —linked to Palma by a century-old wooden train—, viewpoints and the spectacular Cap de Formentor. And everywhere, the caves (Drach, Hams) and countless coves.

Mallorca is worth a week, but in two or three days you can see the essentials of Palma and a foray into the Tramuntana or the caves. There are constant flights and ferries from the mainland.
