Our take
This is the option we recommend most in the comparator and the most-booked: 4.9 stars with 7,700+ reviews don't get built by chance. The price (€47 with the -12% offer) is on par with Julià Travel's classic half day but you add a real winery experience: Oller del Mas isn't a tourist decoration, it's a real 10th-century castle converted into an organic winery that has won genuine awards, and the wines deliver. What they don't tell you: it does NOT include the rack railway (unlike most Castlexperience variants). If you love the iconic image of the rack railway climbing the mountain, book EXB-23 (~€59) which does include it. And groups are big (up to 20 people), so if you want an intimate format or hotel pickup, consider EXB-26 (In Out, group of 8).
What's included
- Shared transport in air-conditioned coach
- Local English- or Spanish-speaking guide (max 20 people per guide)
- Guided tour of the Monastery of Montserrat (1 hour) + 1 hour of free time
- Skip-the-line entry to the Basilica of Montserrat
- Guided visit to Oller del Mas winery (if you select the option)
- 3 local wine tasting with tapas (if you select the option)
Not included

- Gratuities
- Rack railway (this option does NOT include it; book EXB-23 to add it)

Good to know
What to bring
- Comfortable shoes for walking around the mountain
- Water, especially in summer
- Weather-appropriate clothing (Montserrat is usually cooler than Barcelona)
- ID document
Not suitable for
- People with limited mobility (not wheelchair accessible)
- Those expecting the rack railway included (this option doesn't have it)
Things to keep in mind
- Groups can reach 20 people per guide (sometimes 22). For a more intimate format, consider EXB-26 (group of 8)
- The winery is family-owned; for logistics, it may be replaced with another in the same region
- If you want to see the Black Madonna (Moreneta), book the variant that explicitly includes it

The experience
What you'll see
Montserrat is the most recognizable mountain range in Catalonia: a mountain with rounded, serrated peaks (hence the name, Mont Serrat) declared a Natural Park in 1987, with an 11th-century Benedictine monastery at the heart of the massif and, inside, the Moreneta — the Black Madonna patron saint of Catalonia since 1881. This excursion covers the cultural side and adds a Catalan winery experience at a historic 10th-century estate.
- Monastery of Santa María de Montserrat (skip-the-line basilica entry): 1-hour guided tour with a local guide. Renaissance atrium, basilica with its stained glass windows and the chamber where the Moreneta resides (touching her is NOT included in this variant).
- Free time in Montserrat (1 hour): enough to enter the basilica, walk through plaça de Santa Maria or visit the local market (cheese, honey, liqueurs).
- Oller del Mas winery (10th century): medieval castle in the Bages region, owned by the same family for 36 generations, converted into an organic winery. Walk through the vineyards, visit to the barrel room and tasting of 3 local wines with seasonal tapas.
How it works
Meet at the Estació del Nord bus station (Carrer de Nàpols, 68) at least 20 minutes before departure. Check-in mandatory at the Castlexperience office inside the station, section B. Coach departs at 8:30 or 9:45 depending on season.
The journey to Montserrat takes about 1 hour. Once at the monastery, 1-hour guided tour + 1 hour of free time. Then, transfer of about 30 minutes to Oller del Mas (in the Bages region), where the winery team welcomes you for the vineyard walk, the 3-wine tasting and the tapas.
Return to Barcelona in the afternoon — total declared duration between 6 and 7 hours depending on option booked. Groups are max 20 people per guide (rarely 22). Transport is shared with other operator groups.
Who I'd recommend it to
- If you want to combine the cultural visit of Montserrat with a Catalan gastronomic experience without stretching the day to 9-10 hours.
- If you're traveling with partner or adult friends interested in oenology.
- If you value a professional operation with track record (7,700+ reviews, 4.9 ★) over more niche options.
- If your budget is around €47 per person and you prefer paying that to a more expensive full day.
Who I would NOT recommend it to
- If your absolute priority is riding the rack railway — this variant doesn't include it. Book EXB-23 with rack railway included.
- If you expect a small group or personalized pace. Here it can be 20 people; the group of 8 with hotel pickup is the alternative.
- If your goal is to see and touch the Black Madonna. This option doesn't include the chamber access; book a variant that declares it explicitly.
- If you travel with young children or people with reduced mobility. The tour is not accessible and the transfers are long.
Accessibility
Tour not wheelchair accessible. Service animals are allowed. For limited mobility, contact the operator before booking.
